Where to Search

Where do you find the jobs that will actually make you money? Here is a list of the most important resources.

Connections, Connections, Connections! - Many jobs don't even get advertised. As with summer employment, many of the plum jobs are found through word of mouth. So let EVERYBODY know you are looking - family, friends, relatives, even strangers - and keep your eyes and ears open.

For vacation time employment, target jobs that benefit from increased holiday sales. Liquor stores or sit down restaurants, for example, can mean lots of cash and lots of hours!

Targeted Search - If there's a particular type of job you want, either because it's going to pay the big bucks or provide the experience you need, ask around at companies, agencies, and services that are likely to offer these positions. Even if they aren't hiring, they may know who is.

Campus Employment Centres - One of the best places to find out about advertised part-time jobs is right on campus. University and college employment centres specialize in jobs aimed at students, which saves you having to sift through a lot of unsuitable jobs advertised in newspapers and employment centres. Many campus centres now post their jobs in an online database, which means you may even be able to access them from a home computer (provided you are connected to the Internet).

If you visit the employment centre, go early in the morning. Many job postings are faxed or e-mailed to the centre overnight, which means they're usually posted at the centre just before opening. If you're first in the door, you'll get to check out many of these jobs before hordes of other students come snifFind around.

Campus Newspapers - You may find some decent help-wanted ads here, although they're also highly visible to everyone else. When it comes to jobs, there's no such thing as friendly competition. Find out when and where on campus the papers are first delivered, and grab one while it's still hot off the press.

Bulletin Boards - Tucked between the posters advertising the next Campus Pacifist Club "sleep-in" and the Pistol and Rifle Club's next "shoot-out," you may find some job postings on campus bulletin boards. Be sure to read through these ads very carefully, and exercise caution, as they're often for jobs with fly-by-night operators who prey upon students.

Off-campus Government Employment Centres - These centres can offer some opportunities. However, many jobs are not geared to students, so you'll have to wade through the unsuitable ones. Canada Employment Centres for Students may have some part-time postings of interest, especially in mid- to late-August.

City and Community Newspapers - These are a reasonable source as well. The only problem is that they're seen by many people, so you'll have more competition. You'll also have to spend time sifting through for suitable student jobs.

Temporary Agencies - These are another possibility, particularly for clerical-type office positions. If you have regular days off, this may be a good option.

On-line Job Boards - More and more companies are cutting down on the paper clutter that's building on their desks and moving to the Internet to fill their job vacancies. Less need to worry about the colour of your resume paper, or having to rush to the printer for the last minute print job. Job sites have sprung up in large numbers and it's worth searching for jobs here. These are not only good for job searching but also for launching your resume into cyberspace.
