What Students Can Do to Save

Most of us would prefer to get money that we don't have to pay back. No where is this more true than when it comes to paying for school. If we can strategically land that prime Summer Job or that Part-Time Job  (that pays and actually gives practical experience), it can go a long way toward reducing what we actually have to pay back. The key here is strategy—making sure that you increase the odds that it is you that gets your eager and deserving hands on this cash.

Summer Jobs

As students well know, jobs differ greatly in terms of both the experience they offer and the pay they provide. Often a student is faced with the dilemma of having to choose between good experience or good pay. Ideally, it would be best to find a summer job that provided you with both.

If your objective is strictly to earn as much as you can during that time period, then perhaps you will have to opt for the job that pays the most. If you have the luxury of taking a job that offers poor pay but great experience, it may be worth your while in the long run. Experience may increase your marketability once you graduate, in which case any temporary financial sacrifice will be made up quickly.

A summer job taken for experience may also reveal whether you want to pursue this kind of work as a career. For instance, working with children at a summer camp or playground may convince you that you want to pursue teaching as a full-time vocation. Conversely, finding out that teaching is definitely not your forte might save you from wasting the time and expense of a year in teacher's college.

Regardless of your financial situation, you should still try to make as much of your money in your summer job as possible. Targeting your job search will allow you to return to school with an enviable amount of summer earnings, and it will make your summer job hunt easier by focusing on worthwhile employment opportunities.

Part-time Jobs

If that mountain of cash you brought back from the summer looks more like an ant hill these days, you just may end up having to look for a part-time job during the school year to top up your funds. In fact, roughly 40 percent of students end up working some type of part-time job.

Whether it's greeting customers and laying on compliments at your local haute-fashion shop, or bouncing unruly patrons out of the neighbourhood pub, you'll find that some jobs pay okay, while others leave you with very little money at the end of the week. So how do you choose what to eat at the employment smorgasbord that lies before you? By following some simple strategies, you can be certain of coming away full - full of cash, that is.
